WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — To celebrate “Go Red Day.” people gathered in Winston-Salem for a zumba-thon and a chance to break a world record.
The event was held at the Gateway YWCA at 1300 South Main Street and was sponsored by Red H.E.A.R.T. (Help Educate and Reduce Risk Today) The night started out with a Zumba flash mob designed to to show how easy it is to “get moving” and to have fun while doing it!
WFMY News 2’s Tracey McCain was on hand to lead the group in dance and to share the importance of keeping yourself healthy.
Participants also had the opportunity to get heart health information and learn their body mass index and blood presure.
Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines joined Red H.E.A.R.T. and 414 participants and broke the Guinness World Record for the largest group to perform the most sit-ups simultaneously. The group beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneer fans who had the previous record of 318 people.
This isn’t the first time the mayor has broke a record! In 2013, students and Mayor Joines broke the Guinness World Record for having the most students doing Zumbatomic at one time.
National Wear Red Day promotes awareness for women’s heart disease education and prevention.
